Sotloff was Israeli agent, his execution staged

Slain journalist Steven Sotloff was an “Israeli intelligence agent” who served in the Israeli military and his execution might have been staged to give him a new identity, an investigative journalist tells Press TV. Sotloff’s family spokesman Barak Barfi has claimed that Sotloff-- who had been missing in Syria for nearly two years-- was sold to the ISIL terrorist group by “moderate Syrian rebels” for $50,000. “The first thing we have to ask ourselves is that who told the family this and why did they tell the family this?” asked Jim W Dean, managing editor and columnist for Veterans Today. “Either the family is being used to put out a false version of events or do what’s commonly done in intel psyops to put a variety of different scenarios out just to confuse anybody trying to see what has really happened,” he added. “And I have to ask the family if they did not know that he was an Israeli intelligence agent,” Dean said. On September 2, ISIL released a video that purported to show the beheading of Sotloff. In a message, the journalist said that he is "paying the price" for US military intervention in the Middle East. Dean said, “Until we have a body and we can do a DNA test on it, we have absolutely no proof that he is even dead because the videos are so sophisticated today that these things can be fake.” “There is a long history during the Cold War to make agents disappear and give them a new identity of faking executions,” he pointed out. Israel has said it had prevented local media from reporting that Sotloff was also an Israeli citizen in an effort to reduce the risk to his life after he was seized by ISIL militants in Syria last year. Sotloff, who was Jewish, immigrated to Israel in 2005.

US-Russia Cold War could turn into hot war

Former Senior Foreign Policy Analyst James Jatras says that imposing further sanctions against Russia by the US could turn a Cold War situation between the two countries into a hot war. “It is generally expected that President Obama will sign this new law, imposing additional sanctions on Russia and providing for military support to the government in Kiev,” Jatras told Press TV on Tuesday. “This is a very very bad move. It will close the door on any possible de-escalation of the crisis,” he added. The analyst made the comments after Congress on Saturday passed the "Ukraine Freedom Support Act." The bill aims to put more pressure on Moscow by authorizing more sanctions on weapons companies and investors in its high-tech oil projects and to provide the Kiev government with extra military aid. On Monday, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said that Obama had not yet decided how to respond to the bill. Jatras also warned about Washington’s measures against Moscow over the crisis in Ukraine. “This really runs the risk that what is increasingly a Cold War situation between the United States and Russia could turn into a hot war,” he said. “The thinking behind this resolution if you want to call it that is the idea that if we can crank up the pressure on Russia and inflict greater harm on Ukrainians… the Russians will back down in a matter that is essential to their national security,” the analyst noted. Leaked CIA reports say "targeted killings" unsuccessful

A leaked CIA report has revealed that the US government's program to capture and kill militants has not been successful. The report says the program known as targeted killings has had limited results particularly in Afghanistan. It says the Taliban have a high overall ability to replace lost leaders. Iraqi Peshmerga break siege on Mount Sinjar

Officials in Iraqi Kurdistan say Peshmerga forces have managed to break the ISIL siege on Mount Sinjar. The fighters have also opened up a corridor to the mountain so that thousands of Izadi Kurds trapped there can flee. This came just a day after the operation to retake the Kurdish town of Sinjar was launched. On Wednesday, the Peshmerga pushed the militants out of three villages near the Kurdish town. The Iraqi town of Sinjar is home to the Kurdish Izadi minority who had to flee an ISIL onslaught back in August. 8 children found dead in Australia, mother in serious condition

Australian police say eight children have been found dead at a house in the northern city of Cairns. The children, who are aged between 18 months and 15 years, have all been stabbed to death. Officials say a 34-year-old woman has also been hospitalized with injuries from the incident. Relatives of the woman have told the police that the children were all siblings and that the woman was their mother. Officials were informed about the crime after another sibling, a 20-year-old man, arrived home to find his brothers and sisters dead. There are different media accounts on the incident. Some reports say the children were suffocated. Violence has been on the rise in Australia lately. China has criticized the United States' decision to sell used warships to Taiwan, which it regards as a renegade province. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Friday that it does not approve of the deal. This is the first time Taiwan has purchased military hardware from the US since 2011, when the US transferred upgrades to F-16 fighter jets. Revolutionary language learning software unveiled in Iran

A software which is designed to make the job of second language learners easier; and much easier than ever. A team of Iranian computer programmers and linguists have presented their latest product to the market known as IRIS. Designers of the software call their innovation a breakthrough in second language learning which in the case of this product works as an artificial English teacher for Persian speakers. The software is able to read subtitles for movies, music videos and even personal videos. With a single click on a selected scene students can learn sentences, new words, idioms, grammatical structures based on the Chomsky tree as well as pronunciations in British, American and Australian. In addition to flash cards the software contains twenty movies and a two month free movie downloader bonus. The creators of IRIS say that their software could be designed to render the same service to second language learners of other nationalities like German’s who want to learn French or Turks who may want to learn some Spanish. Two months after its release the software has made a splash. Some language institutes are now presenting courses based on the digital method. Iran’s government which plan’s to diminish dependence on oil revenues is urging entrepreneurs and technologists to turn their innovative ideas into products that keep the economic wheels spinning. Some experts say that this is the new approach by officials in Tehran towards a non oil based economy. According to figures revenues for software production across the world reached above 670 billion dollars in 2013. Clinton claims she had doubts about video explanation after Benghazi strike. (Fox News) Hillary Clinton, in a sit-down interview with Fox News, suggested Tuesday that she had doubts from the outset about whether the Benghazi terror attack was triggered by a protest over an anti-Islam film -- though her State Department ended up pushing that narrative for days. "This was the fog of war," Clinton said, when asked about the administration's controversial public explanation of the attack. "My own assessment careened from the video had something to do with it, the video had nothing to do with it -- it may have affected some people, it didn't affect other people," she said, in an interview with Fox News' Bret Baier and Greta Van Susteren. Clinton added: "There's no doubt terrorists were involved." The former secretary of State appeared to offer a nuanced explanation of how her department came to initially embrace the video explanation. She stood by prior statements that she was not aware of any reports contradicting intelligence community talking points citing the video, yet suggested she was personally unsure about what caused the violence. Four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens, died in the attack. "I was trying to make sense of it," Clinton said. Despite her own apparent deliberations, the State Department put out a statement the night of Sept. 11 that cited "inflammatory material posted on the Internet." Clinton suggested Tuesday that the connection was based on intelligence community findings. The former secretary of State spoke to Fox News as she tours the country in promotion of her new memoir, "Hard Choices," returning in full force to the public spotlight after leaving the Obama State Department last year. The former senator and first lady addressed a wide range of topics, from the NSA scandal to Iraq to the internal deliberations of the Obama administration. Clinton is widely believed to be preparing for a 2016 presidential run, though has been coy on that question for months. Still dogging her political prospects, however, is the controversy over the 2012 Benghazi terror attack. State Department official Sean Smith, and CIA contractors Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods, also died in the strike. The State Department, under her leadership at the time, continues to face questions -- and a congressional probe -- over whether it ignored security warnings leading up to the attack, and why the department and others in the administration overlooked evidence of a terror attack in favor of the faulty explanation that it was fueled by a protest. Hours before the interview, the administration announced that a key suspect in the attack, Ahmed Abu Khattala, was captured by a U.S. team over the weekend and was being brought back to the United States to face criminal prosecution. The capture could help temper criticism that the Obama administration had not brought anybody to justice for the deadly assault, though other suspects remain at large. Clinton said Tuesday that the capture over the weekend shows the U.S. will go after anyone who targets Americans. "We have an unwavering commitment to go after anyone no matter how long it takes who is responsible for harming Americans," she told Fox News, adding that if she were president and the evidence were in place, she would be "ready to give the order" to read Khattala his Miranda rights. As for the events of Sept. 11, 2012, Clinton said she was engaged with a "full array of officials" on the response to the attack. "We had open lines," she said, adding that President Obama told the Pentagon to "do everything you can to help our people."

The $40 million, five-year study concluded that CIA officials exaggerated the value of the intelligence they gleaned from dozens of “high-value detainees” held at black site prisons, where they were subjected to so-called “enhanced interrogation techniques” such as sleep deprivation and waterboarding. The committee reviewed more than 6 million pages of top-secret CIA documents and found that the architect of the interrogation program was a retired Air Force psychologist named James Mitchell, an agency contractor who — according to news reports — personally waterboarded alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. The Senate report does not identify Mitchell by name. He is referred to as "Contractor A" throughout the executive summary. Mitchell has a signed a non-disclosure agreement with the CIA and was unable to discuss his alleged role in the agency's enhanced interrogation program, but VICE News met up with him in suburban Florida to discuss the Senate's report and one of the darkest chapters of the war on terror. Kwame Nkrumah, the president of Africa’s first independent country, described Pan-Africanism as “The total liberation and unification of Africa under Scientific Socialism.” It is an ideology and movement that encourages the solidarity of Africans worldwide. It is based on the belief that unity is vital to economic, social, and political progress and aims to “unify and uplift” people of African descent. Leaders like Thomas Sankara of Burkina Faso and Patrice Lumumba of the Congo were assassinated by agents of the CIA because of their revolutionary Pan-African stance. Recent history shows that, as a movement, Pan-Africanism does not have the same force as it did during the anti-colonial struggles. Later this month, African leaders will go to the US to attend the UN General Assembly in New York.

Comment - UK reacts amid ISIL threat

British Prime Minister David Cameron has vowed that the ISIL terrorist group will "be squeezed out of existence," as the militants threaten to kill a British hostage. Back in August, Cameron’s office released a statement announcing Britain’s decision to arm Kurdish forces battling the ISIL in northern Iraq by transporting military supplies from other states. Meanwhile, US President Barack Obama has authorized military strikes on ISIL positions in Iraq. The ISIL Takfiri militants took control of Mosul on June 10, which was followed by the takeover of Tikrit, located 140 kilometers (87 miles) northwest of the capital. Tens of thousands of people have been displaced after their cities were captured by the ISIL militants.

3 Sunni clerics killed, 2 injured in Basra drive-by shooting

Three Iraqi Sunni clerics have been killed and two others wounded in a drive-by shooting in the southern province of Basra. The attack took place when the clerics headed from provincial capital Basra to al-Zubair after attending a meeting on preparations for celebrating Prophet Muhammad’s birthday. Iraqi security forces have blamed the ISIL militants for the deadly attack. Meanwhile, at least 20 civilians including children have been killed in a mortar attack on a residential area in the city of Fallujah. Also, Iraqi security sources say the ISIL terrorists have executed 15 civilians in the city. The sources say they were killed for refusing to join the ISIL. Coast guard in control of drifting cargo ship

The Italian coast guard says it's taken control of a drifting migrant ship off the southwestern coast of Calabria. According to the Italian authorities, the cargo ship with some four-hundred fifty migrants, is now being towed to the port of Crotone. This, after a rescue team managed to board the vessel. Bahrainis rally in support of jailed opposition leader Sheikh Ali Salman

Bahrainis have held fresh rallies across the Persian Gulf kingdom, in support of the detained opposition leader Sheikh Ali Salman. Demonstrations took place in the capital Manama and several villages including Diraz, Sitra and Karzakan. The rallies were held in defiance of a ban imposed by the Al Khalifah regime. Troops used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the protesters. There are reports of arrests and injuries during the clashes. Sheikh Salman was detained by security forces on Sunday. He’s the Secretary General of al-Wefaq National Islamic Society, the biggest Shia opposition group in Bahrain. Pentagon developing lightweight drones for urban missions

The project, called the Fast Lightweight Autonomy, is being developed by the Pentagon’s technology research arm, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or the DARPA. It is meant to enable troops to use drones that can fly up to 20 meters per second in tight urban spaces. The lightweight drones, that can be deployed in their hundreds through a single bomb, will have no communication to the operator and can fly without GPS waypoints. ISIL executes 15 young men in Fallujah for not pledging allegiance

War continues; but Syrian govrenment stable

Four years into the bloody conflict the government of President Bashar Al-Assad remains stable. Gaining more momentum after he won a new term in office in the first multi candidate presidential election in the country, Assad pledged to go on fighting what he called foreign-backed terrorism in his country while remaining open peace efforts aimed at reconciling his with his Syrian opponents. 2014 was definitely tough but for the Syrian government it carried many positive developments … kicking off with a much anticipated Geneva talks that ended with no results –a crushing stalemate and lack of results drove the UN envoy to Syria Al-Lakhdar Ebrahimi to resign and to be replaced by the veteran Swedish diplomat Stefan Di Mistura . Mistura who came to Damascus aware of the obstacles, is reportedly working on a plan to freeze fighting around the city of Aleppo. This is a major gain for the Syrian government as it is widely seen as the key player in the Syrian crisis that no one can afford to ignore. Diplomatics efforts have also been underway by Russia to bring the players in Syria at the negotiating table. On the ground, the Syrian government made gains throughout the country, further securing the periphery of Damascus and taking the once rebel stronghold of Al-Qalamoun area along the Lebanese border while wining more grounds against the militants near Aleppo. The tide has already shifted in favor of the Syrian government in the international arena. The Syrian government has just reopened its embassy in Kuwait and other countries are reportedly going to follow suit. This shows that the political isolation imposed on the Syrian government may end soon. Syrian flag still hoisted in Damascus

2014 has come to end with Syria still in a state of war. Yet, last year was fruitful for the Syrian army. The Syrian troops expanded the areas under their control across the country. To the north of Damascus, the army fought al-Nusra Front in al-Qalamoun, taking control of almost the entire region including the main militant base, Yabroud in March, and also secured the northern countryside of the capital. In Eastern al-Ghouta around Damascus, the army pounded the militants’ stronghold in Mleiha in August and regained al-Dukhania. Adra al-Balad and Omaliah were also strategic towns purged of militants in September. In central Syria, the army made a significant victory in Homs forcing hundreds of militants to withdraw from the old city, securing over 90 percent of Homs. Army units also took control of Morek, a main militant-held town near Hama. The army made another strategic gain on the borders with Turkey regaining control of Kassab in June. The Syrian army liberated the central prison of Aleppo in May and advanced north of the city towards Handarat tightening the siege on militants and intercepting militants supply lines with Turkey. Analysts say the advances on ground have an important impact politically. The Syrian strategy has been based not only on fighting terrorism but also establishing national reconciliation. Calm in 2014 returned slowly to a number of areas in Damascus countryside namely Al-Qadam, Esali , Babila and Beit Sahem where a number of steps of a reconciliation deal were implemented such as a ceasefire and the entry of food supplies. 2014 ends with the Syrian flag still hoisted in the heart of the Syrian capital, signaling the ability of the Syrian state of facing an unprecedented proxy war on the country. 2015 starts as battles are ongoing on Syria’s soil, but also it begins with efforts for reaching a political solution in a bid to save the country from another year of bloodshed. At least 20 civilians killed in Fallujah mortar attack

Kurdish fighters kill senior Saudi militants in Syrian border town

US using North Korea as propaganda tool against Russia, China

An American political commentator says the United States is using North Korea as a propaganda tool in its never-ending propaganda war against Russia, and China. Eric Draitser, the founder of StopImperialism.com, made the remarks in a phone interview with Press TV on Wednesday while commenting on Washington’s latest accusations against North Korea. American officials investigating last month's cyberattack against Sony Pictures are looking at the possibility that North Korea probably hired foreign hackers to carry out the massive strike, according to a US official who is close to the investigation team. Investigators believe that North Korea possibly "contracted out" some of the cyber work since the country lacks the capability to conduct some elements of the sophisticated operation by itself, the official said on Monday. He was speaking on condition of anonymity. “The statements from the FBI and the United States regarding the alleged complicity of North Korea in the cyberattack on Sony is, of course, an attempt to essentially distance itself, that is to say Washington distancing itself from the accusations it made no more than 48 ago hours regarding North Korea’s supposed direct involvement in this attack,” Draitser said. “Essentially, what happed is [that] independent experts in the field, who have been privy to some of the information who have conducted their own investigation, have now come out publically stating the claim that North Korea was involved in this is not supported by the evidence,” he added. “There is no evidence pointing to that.” The hack -- which has been described as the most devastating cyberattack on US soil -- has paralyzed Sony Pictures and led to the cancelation of a controversial comic movie, “The Interview,” which depicts the fictional assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. While US investigators are looking at the possibility whether North Korea Pyongyang enlisted help from foreign contractors, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) maintained that Pyongyang was behind the sophisticated attack. “The United States has been spinning this issue for its own propagandistic purposes to further its own agenda in East Asia, the continued isolation of North Korea, and using this issue not only as the weapon against China and as a means for expanding the US hegemony in the region, but to drive a wedge between the growing alliances in Asia and to use North Korea as a propaganda tool in its continued propaganda war against Russia, and China,” Draitser noted. In the US state of Florida, a man has been arrested for allegedly beheading his own mother on New Year's Eve. The County Sheriff's Office reportedly charged the 23-year-old Christian Gomez with first-degree murder. Investigators say Gomez was angry over his mother QUOTE nagging to put boxes away in the attic. They say Gomez hit his mother over the head with an ax, then cut her head off in the garage and dragged the body to the garbage outside the home. The mother's decapitated body was later found by her older son who informed the police of the crime. Gomez was ostensibly diagnosed with schizophrenia and prescribed medications. Netanyahu urges ICC to reject Palestinian bid

The move could pave the way for the Palestinians to sue Israeli officials over war crimes. The United States has also strongly opposed the bid, calling it counter-productive. 'Success in Moscow talks depends largely on Syrian opposition's foreign backers'

Russia has invited Syria’s opposition figures to talks in Moscow in an effort to end the four-year conflict in the Middle Eastern country. 28 opposition figures, including the head of the so-called Syrian National Coalition and a former Syrian deputy prime minister Qadri Jamil have been invited to the meeting. The talks scheduled for later this month aim to prepare for dialog with the Syrian government. Opposition groups have not yet decided on attending the meeting.
